In the RIP process, PostScript, PDF and raster formats are converted into system-specific screen/ raster data for output on printing systems. ColorGATE is one of the world's first suppliers who used RIP software to solve additional major challenges in color management and in raster separation. Meanwhile, these have become a standard in RIP software solutions. ColorGATE includes always the latest Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) in its basic solutions for a smooth end-to-end, highly automated PDF workflow for digital, offset and packaging printing and provides therefore many advantages in PDF data handling and color management. ColorGATE Raster Products can optionally be extended by APPE solutions.

Adobe PDF Print Engine renders content which matches the display in all other Adobe Creative Cloud product (Adobe DC e.g.). Using the same core Adobe PDF technology at every stage of the print workflow.

During the integration process of APPE, ColorGATE removed bugs and improved the stability and speed of PDF processing further.

    • Cache Management: Fast processing of repeating elements in VDP and step-and-repeat labels/packaging jobs and opaque and transparent elements can be cached and retrieved as well as of both rasters and device primitives (Display List elements)
    • Live transparency: Accurate rendering of transparent images and graphics, drop shadows and feathering, even when combined with spot colors and smooth shades
    • 16-bit processing: End-to-end processing of images and graphics defined with 16-bit colors, ensuring smooth gradients at any length (no banding), and precise colors on any substrate
    • Tight integration with PDF libary: APPE can invoke the Adobe PDF Library at run-time, enabling real-time modification of job content, immediately prior to rendering
    • Non-binary halftones: APPE can produce accurate 2-bit, 3-bit and 4-bit continuous tone output for non-binary halftone screening
    • VDP support: APPE supports Variable Data Print (VDP) workflows where job content is expressed as Optimized PDF or PDF/VT, or where a PDF file is used as a page element in any other VDP architecture. Direct mail and Transpromo jobs can take advantage of the full richness of the PDF imaging model with high impact personalized content
    • Today´s creation process of professional graphical documents is dominated by image editing, layout and document management applications of Adobe. Often this process results in complex graphics documents with partially variable image, text and vector elements that may feature transparencies or overprints and thereunto contains different color models and may contain image effect filters.

      To transform such complex design into accurate print data, whose pixel information per printing color channel reproduces content- and color-wise exactly the output intent of the originator, is the core task of a RIP-solution.
